Types of Electric Vehicle Chargers
A complete guide to charging levels (Level 1, Level 2, Level 3), connector standards (CCS-Combo, CHAdeMO, NACS, J1772), and available adapters in Canada.
Electric Vehicle Charging Connector Standards
Visual guide showing Level 3 DC Fast Charging ports (CCS-Combo & CHAdeMO), the Level 1-2-3 universal port (Tesla / NACS / SAE J3400), and the Level 1-2 AC port (SAE J1772).
Connector Standards at a Glance
Ordered left to right as shown in the diagram above
Combines the standard J1772 AC inlet with two large dedicated high-voltage direct current (DC) pins below. Widely used by North American and European EV manufacturers.
The 3 Levels of EV Charging
How speed, electrical power, and charging locations differ in Canada.
Level 3: DC Fast Charging (Direct Current)
Level 3 is very fast public charging. Instead of supplying alternating current (AC) to the vehicle's onboard converter, Level 3 stations convert AC to direct current (DC) inside the station tower and feed high-voltage electricity directly into the battery pack.
- Very high speed: Adds up to 80% battery capacity in 15 to 30 minutes.
- Ideal for road trips, rapid highway top-ups, taxi fleets, and commercial vehicles.
- Located across Canadian highway corridors and major networks (Circuit Électrique, Ivy, FLO, Tesla Superchargers, Electrify Canada, Petro-Canada).
- Connector ports: CCS-Combo (CCS1), NACS / SAE J3400 (Tesla), and CHAdeMO.
- Not installed in homes due to heavy commercial 3-phase power and infrastructure requirements.
Level 2: 240V AC Charging (The Most Common)
Level 2 is the most common charging method for daily EV ownership. It operates on a dedicated 240-volt electrical circuit—the same voltage used by heavy residential appliances like electric clothes dryers, ovens, or water heaters.
- The gold standard for daily home charging overnight and workplace/hotel destination parking.
- Can be hardwired into a 40A, 50A, or 60A circuit breaker or plugged into a NEMA 14-50 or 6-50 outlet.
- Fully charges a typical long-range battery pack from empty in 6 to 10 hours while you sleep.
- Connector ports: SAE J1772 (standard on non-Tesla vehicles) or NACS (Tesla / J3400).
Level 1: 120V AC Standard Household Outlet
Level 1 is when using a portable mobile charging cable plugged into a standard 120V Canadian household wall outlet (NEMA 5-15).
- Zero installation cost: Plugs directly into any standard grounded 3-prong 120V household wall receptacle.
- Slowest charging rate: Adds approximately 6 to 8 km of range per hour of charging.
- Takes 24 to 50+ hours for a full charge on large EV batteries.
- Well suited for Plug-in Hybrids (PHEVs with small 10-18 kWh batteries), cottages, emergency travel, or short daily commutes under 40 km/day.
At-a-Glance Level Comparison
| Level | Voltage & Power | Km Added / Hr | Typical Full Charge | Primary Location & Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | 120V AC (1.4 kW) | ~6 - 8 km/h | 24 - 48+ hours | Standard wall outlet, PHEVs, emergency back-up |
| Level 2 | 240V AC (7.2 - 11.5 kW) | ~35 - 50 km/h | 6 - 10 hours | Overnight home charging, workplaces, destination lots |
| Level 3 (DC Fast) | 400V - 1000V DC (50 - 350 kW) | 150 - 350+ km in 20 min | 15 - 30 min (to 80%) | Highway travel, public charging hubs, rapid top-ups |
Which EV Adapters Are Available in Canada?
Adapters allow you to seamlessly cross-connect between different plug types and fast-charging networks across the country.
NACS to CCS1 Adapter (DC Fast Charging)
Allows non-Tesla vehicles equipped with CCS1 ports to access the Tesla Supercharger network across Canada. Provided by automakers or approved third-party manufacturers.
CCS1 to NACS Adapter (DC Fast Charging)
Enables Tesla owners to fast-charge at non-Tesla Level 3 public charging stations across Canada. Supports up to 250 kW charging on modern Tesla vehicles.
J1772 to NACS Adapter (Level 1 & Level 2 AC)
Included standard in the mobile kit with every Tesla delivered in Canada. Allows Tesla drivers to connect to any universal Level 2 station.
NACS to J1772 Adapter (Level 2 AC)
Allows drivers of non-Tesla vehicles to plug into Tesla AC destination chargers at hotels, resorts, ski hills, and homes.
NEMA Mobile Pigtail Adapters (120V & 240V)
Swappable wall plugs that attach to your mobile charging unit, enabling you to plug into standard 120V outlets or high-output 240V receptacles while traveling or camping.
CHAdeMO to NACS Adapter (DC Fast - Legacy)
A legacy adapter allowing older Tesla vehicles to fast-charge at 50 kW CHAdeMO stations where CCS or Superchargers were unavailable.
Certified Adapters & Safety in Canada
Always verify that high-power DC and AC adapters have genuine safety certifications (such as UL 2252, ETL, or CSA) before plugging into high-output fast chargers. Uncertified third-party adapters can pose safety risks and may void vehicle warranty provisions.
